Ambergate to Cromford
Leaving Ambergate, the route heads north through the Derwent Valley towards Cromford. It’s a gentle opening section that allows the legs to warm up before the climbing begins.
The valley roads are particularly beautiful early in the morning when the surrounding hills are still wrapped in mist and the traffic is minimal. Following the river north, you quickly get a sense of why this area attracts cyclists from across the country.
Cromford is rich in history and provides a fitting gateway into the Peak District.
Cromford to Winster
The first real challenge of this Ambergate cycling route begins as you climb through Bonsall towards Winster.
The gradient isn’t severe, but it’s enough to remind you that Derbyshire rarely offers anything for free. Stone walls line the narrow lanes and the higher you climb, the wider the views become.
Looking back across the Derwent Valley is one of the first standout moments of the ride.
Winster itself is one of Derbyshire’s prettiest villages. The limestone cottages and narrow streets feel almost untouched by time, making it a perfect place to pause for a photograph before continuing.

Winster to Bakewell
From Winster, the route rolls through Elton and Youlgreave before reaching Bakewell.
This section is classic White Peak cycling. Quiet roads wind through open countryside, dry stone walls divide fields and sheep watch lazily from the hillsides.
It’s the sort of terrain that encourages a steady rhythm rather than hard efforts, allowing riders to enjoy the landscape.
Eventually, the road drops into Bakewell.
Every cyclist faces the same dilemma here.
Keep riding or stop for coffee?
Most riders choose the latter.
Bakewell to Chatsworth
Leaving Bakewell, the route heads towards Baslow and the magnificent Chatsworth Estate.
This is arguably the most scenic section of the entire Ambergate cycling route.
The roads sweep through beautiful parkland where deer can often be spotted grazing beneath ancient trees. As the landscape opens up, Chatsworth House gradually appears ahead, dominating the valley.
Even if you’ve ridden through the estate many times before, it never loses its impact.
It’s one of those places where cyclists naturally ease off the pedals and simply enjoy the surroundings.
Climbing Beeley Moor
After passing through Beeley village, the road begins its ascent onto Beeley Moor.
This is the defining climb of the day.
The lower slopes allow you to settle into a comfortable rhythm, but higher up the road becomes increasingly exposed. If there’s a headwind blowing across the moor, you’ll certainly know about it.
The effort is rewarded at the summit with panoramic views across the Derbyshire countryside.
This is the kind of scenery that makes climbing worthwhile.
The Descent into Matlock Bath
What goes up must come down.
The descent towards Matlock is one of the most enjoyable in the area, combining flowing bends, excellent visibility and spectacular views across the valley.
By the time you reach Matlock Bath, the atmosphere changes completely.
The cafés are busy, motorcyclists gather along the promenade and cyclists stop for a well-earned coffee before tackling the final miles home.
If you’ve resisted stopping earlier, this is the ideal place to take a break.
Returning to Ambergate
The final section follows the valley back towards Ambergate.
With the major climbing complete, it’s a chance to reflect on everything this route has offered.
Historic villages.
Quiet country lanes.
One of Britain’s most famous stately homes.
A classic Derbyshire climb.
And some of the finest road cycling scenery anywhere in England.
That’s what makes this Ambergate cycling route so special.
Why This Ambergate Cycling Route Stands Out
